Torch Ginger

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 01/07/16

I have always been fascinated with torch ginger blossoms and their intricacy. Those who are familiar with my work know that I enjoy painting the smaller details of a flower.  I started this single flower a few years ago before I started painting plumerias. The torch ginger will be somewhat detailed while the background will be flowing, dreamier, and looser than my usual style. This photo is pretty accurate as far as color goes.

Thank You, Barbara!

My thanks to Barbara who noticed that the last name under my photo on the 'About the Artist' page has been misspelled ever since the website came into existence!

Bird of Paradise is Done

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 01/06/16

Finished the "Bird of Paradise" painting and took it to the photographer/printer. Prints will be ready for my first fair in 2016 on February12 in Poipu. (I am off to Bali January 14 to February 9 so no shipping until I return.) Will put this one and the "Purple Dendrobium Spray" in the online gallery after I get back.

Finishing Up Bird of Paradise

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 01/04/16

Back to finishing up Bird of Paradise watercolor. I have blurred the line between sky and horizon. That division was splitting the painting in half even if I was careful not to put it exactly in the center of the paper.  The horizon would have been better a little lower. Will be defining the flower details with more color.

Purple Dendrobium Spray Final

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 12/30/15

I tweaked the purple dendrobiums by defining more floral details, adding purple to the hillside on the right to balance all the purple on the left, and added more color to the bottom left.  All of that white was too distracting.

Bird of Paradise in Progress

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 12/24/15

I really like the blues of the sky and water (which are actually darker than this photo) against the greens and orange of the bird of paradise plant. Will finish up the flowers by going darker and define the leaves better.

Purple Dendrobium Spray (Updated 12/24/15)

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 12/14/15

The printer was overbooked so I retrieved this painting and have decided to define the flowers with more detail. Will post with a better photo contrast when done.

Purple Dendrobium Spray in Progress

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 12/05/15

I am pleased with the progress of my current watercolor painting of a spray of purple dendrobium orchids. I will probably leave that dramatic upper right hand corner as is.

One More Fair for 2015

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 12/05/15

My last fair for the year will be the Holiday Craft Fair at the Church of the Pacific in Princeville on Saturday, December 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can take pictures with Santa from 12 noon to 1. There will be a bake sale as well. Come early and if you say the magic phrase, "Hana Ho Ho Ho," you will receive a free hand made Christmas gift while supplies last.  Hope to see some of you there!

August Fairs are Back On

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 08/03/15

I have decided to participate in a couple of August craft fairs since my eye surgery won't be until October.  The first will be on August 15 from 8 to 2 at the Veteran's Center in Lihue. The County fair will be on at the same time right next door. Then on August 22, I will be at a big tent arts and crafts fair (35+ vendors) adjacent to Poipu Beach Park from 9 to 4. I will have the calendars at both those events. Hope to see some of you there!

2016 Calendars

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 07/26/15

My calendar publisher had a great sale so I put together the 2016 Wall Calendar before their deadline.  It includes plumerias, hibiscuses, and orchids and will be in the same style and format as last year's. Customers were happy with the quality. Pages are thick card stock and photos of the paintings are glossy. The calendar part is not glossy and can be written upon. Last year, the calendars came out in October which was too late for the craft fairs. I only ordered 100. If I run out, there will be a rain check until my order later in the year when they have a price break on calendars.

'Ihilani' (Heavenly Splendor)

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 04/29/15

Naming this one 'Ihilani' which in Hawaiian means "heavenly splendor."
The plumeria variety is the white Singapore obtusa which is plentiful on Kauai. Limited edition giclee prints are available at the Gallery - Plumerias 2 link on the left.

"Celadines" Completed

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/20/15

I have completed the large 30x42 painting of the Celadine plumerias and will be having it shipped to the buyers in Utah next week.  There will be note cards on this website a few weeks from now but I don't make large or small prints of commissions. The owners of the original will let me use it for the 2016 calendar. Thanks for following along here and on my Facebook page, Plumeria Paintings by Marcia.

My First Craft Fair for the Year

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/13/15

I will be one of 40 vendors across the street from Poipu Beach Park for the first large big tent fair of the year.  This will be on Saturday, February 14, from 9:00 to 4:00 p.m. Hope you will stop by if you are on the island.

Celadine Feb 2

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/02/15

Still carefully developing the tangle of leaves on the right. Added darker shadows to the flowers on the right and will go in with more yellow. The buds have to go darker as well or they will get lost in the painting.
